Boxing Day

I worked in a clothing store for Boxing Day, which earned me some store credit and on top of that, I got to make my purchases for cheap (I won't tell you how much the prices were discounted for me ;)  Here's what I bought! I haven't bought anything from any other sales this week... if money dropped from somewhere then maybe I would buy a few more things.

For me: Sweatshirt - Element

For me: Cardigan - Roxy
For my sister: Hoody - Fox Racing
Back

For my brother: Hoody - Volcom

I'll try to post some Christmas present pictures soon ;) I don't have time now as I have to head to work, but for now here's a wonderful Dire Straits song and a few pictures from our Christmas table.

Asetelma / Table setting
Pukki oli liian hyvä / Santa was too good
Meiltä löyty perus lanttu, porkkana, ja peruna laatikot
We had the basic rutabaga, carrot, and potato casseroles
Juusto lautanen / Cheese plate
Joulukinkku ja sinapit / Christmas ham and Finnish mustard
Karjalanpiirakat / Karelian pies
Mun lautanen ja kotikalja/ My plate and home-made beer
Meidän hauva / Our dog

Not a Christmasy song by any means, but it's been playing in my head for days!

Porsaita äidin oomme kaikki

Joulunvalmistelu kiireitä kyllä riittää! Sain onneksi jo aikasemmin tällä viikolla kaikki shoppaukset tehtyy niin nyt jäi aikaa leipomiseen sun muuhun. Eilen leivoin joskus keskellä yötä saksalaista rommikakkua (se on jo puoliks syöty) ja tänään vierahti muutama tunti piparkakkujen leipomisessa.

So much to do to get ready for Christmas! Luckily I finished all my shopping earlier this week so now I've had time left over for baking among other things. I baked a German rum cake at some point in the middle of last night (it's already half-eaten) and today I spent several hours baking Finnish gingerbread cookies.

Ja lopuks yks joulu lemppari :)

And finally a Christmas favourite

I suppose I should make another post...not much comes to mind though since I only managed to get about 4 hours of sleep last night before having to write an exam this morning. I finished in an hour though! Now I should get studying for my next (and final) exam.

So here's a bit of this and that.

I went to the thrift store at some point this week (or was it last week?). I found myself a jacket, a jean jacket, and a military vest. :) Here's a few pictures of them. I don't know what to do with the jean jacket - should I make it into a vest or leave it as is? I'm not quite sure what my opinion of the wide sleeves is quite yet.... What are your thoughts? I could try to post a picture of me wearing it (just not now - I'm sick and tired so not quite looking my best ;)

It's a light spring jacket, but it's been warm enough to wear it without dying of cold.

Takki/Jacket - Plum

Love at first sight. And it's well made!

Liivi/Vest - De Sentino

Tässä siis se takki mistä oli kyse.
This is the jacket I was talking about.

Farkkutakki/Jean jacket - LA Blues

Eihän koskaan voi olla liian monta huulipunaa!

You can never have too many lipsticks!

 Huulipuna/Lipstick - Rimmel (124 Boredeaux)

Ja sit minä eilen väsyneen näkösenä.

And then me looking tired yesterday.

 Ja siinä se!

And that's that!

Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash

I am still alive, contrary to what my lack of posts may suggest.

Two exams down, 3 to go! But at least it's the weekend now and I can avoid studying for a bit :)

And now for a short list of things that have kept me alive/sane over the past couple weeks:

1. Pink Floyd

2. Mineral water and coffee (consumed in copious amounts whenever paper and exam time rolls around)
3. Fun things with friends

Last weekend, I had the privilege of attending a Canucks game for the first time. Disappointingly, we lost, but I still enjoyed the experience of seeing the game live :)

Oma maa mansikka, muu maa mustikka

For a class I had this morning, I had to write a story on how a saying of my choosing came to be. I picked a finnish saying to make it more interesting and wrote the story in a few minutes before leaving to class. Anyways, here it is for your enjoyment ;)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There once lived an old man and his old wife. His wife had big dreams – she wanted to travel the world – see places she’d only read or heard about! The old man, on the other hand, loved everything familiar. As a child, he had been torn away from his home soil of Finland, where he had spent his childhood, and been forced to move with his parents to Bulgaria. The initial shock of the move had been great, as he loved his home country dearly – and still does – but after time passed, he began to grow fond of the cottage in which he had spent the rest of his life. He dreamed daily of returning to his home land, but he feared change, and so he never did. He had met his wife on a much dreaded trip to the city – she thought the city was exciting and adventurous; he loathed it – and they married a year later. Decades had passed, and their personalities clashed just as much now as they had from the start (she was still convinced that she could change him; he was stubborn as a mule).

The cottage the old couple lived in was surrounded by wild blueberry bushes. The wife adored these bushes and spent hours in the summer gathering the berries and baking blueberry pies. The old man hated blueberries. He much preferred strawberries. He was particularly fond of the strawberry bush he possessed, and he carefully tended it year-long. It was the only possession of his left over from his childhood in Finland. He loved to close his eyes as he tended the strawberry bush and reminisce about the warm summer days spent at the cabin in his home country – swimming in the glorious lake, freedom blowing through his hair. Then he would open his eyes and see the lacklustre cottage he lived in, or his wife.

There was a language barrier between the couple – he spoke but little Bulgarian, she spoke no Finnish – but they remained united by their love (though they both secretly loathed each other). She was bothered by a particular phrase the old man used. “Oma maa mansikka, muu maa mustikka,” he would say as she suggested travel plans of any kind. She hated when he used this phrase! The old man knew she did not speak any Finnish, yet he said it to her all the time.

Well, dear readers, let me explain what the old wife could not understand, and which you, I presume, do not either. The literal translation of the phrase goes like this: Own land strawberry, other land blueberry. In a sense, it is like saying “Home Sweet Home.” Other places and other things may have been sweet to his wife, but what was familiar, to the old man, was sweeter still.
